Cabo San Lucas: Unstoppable Fun!

One of the things I love most about fall is my annual trip to Cabo San Lucas. Cabo never disappoints as a great place to rest, recharge—and have a little adventure! I us

ually take the trip with a dozen or so people. The more the merrier! 

A few years ago, I helped orchestrate a surprise family reunion. Three brothers traveled with us and had no idea their only sister would show up to surprise them. It was hard keeping that secret under wraps, but it was worth it for such a fun outcome. And there’s no better place than Cabo for fun!

Happy Birthday, Sammy!

One reason to visit Cabo in October is for Sammy Hagar’s Birthday Bash. The annual event is centered around the singer’s birthday on October 13. 

Cabo Wabo Cantina, Sammy’s signature bar, restaurant, and music venue hosts three or four nights of birthday concerts. Guests register for a ticket lottery to see the show in the Cantina—just Sammy and 400 of his biggest fans! 

Only a few from our group were lucky enough to win the chance to buy tickets, but I was able to get in for free in the “standby” line! It was well worth the wait for an unforgettable night.

Experience Cabo on Land and Sea

Another reason I love Cabo is the variety of excursions available that allow you to experience the city and the surrounding area. There’s something for everyone.

We went on two adventures. The first was a 4-wheeling trip that took us on one of the best off- road trails I’ve ever seen in Mexico. It had some challenging terrain, especially for the first-time 4-wheelers in our group. A few may have returned from the escapade with some bumps and bruises—but with memories and stories that made it all worth it!

Next, we ventured out on a Luxury Day Sailing/Snorkelling/Paddle-Boarding trip. We were picked up at our hotel at 9 am and driven to the marina where we checked in and boarded our sailboat. The boat and its crew were fantastic!

We sailed down the coast of the Baja California Peninsula to a small cove where we could snorkel and paddle-board. I’m a newbie to paddle-boarding but I enjoyed getting to try it out and made it onto my knees. Others hopped up on their feet like it was nothing. I guess I totally need to work on my core strength for next time! 

Back on board the boat, we enjoyed a gourmet lunch, then sailed off to catch some wind. The captain opened up both sails and we were off to the races.  What a great ride! We actually had the boat up on its side at one point—but no one lost that delicious lunch! Sailing will definitely be on our agenda again next time. So much fun, especially with a group.

Unstoppable Food, Drinks, and Nightlife

After that fun-filled day, it was back to the hotel to clean up and head back into town. The Cabo Wabo Cantina is a favorite place to sit with friends and listen to great music. The house band is phenomenal. 

Next, it’s around the block to Slim’s Elbow Room, the World’s Smallest Bar. We make it a point to stop in and see Rosie, our favorite Cabo bartender. We also check to see if 

the dollar bill we tacked to the wall before hurricane Odile in 2014 is still there. Yep! It is!

Slim’s truly is a tiny bar. And they only offer bottled beer and tequila—not even any mixers! So most people stop by for just one and move on. But it’s a great place to people watch, so we like to hang out and watch the world go by.

If you are a foodie, Cabo should be on your list of destinations. The marina is full of great restaurants to pick from. Here, the fresh catch of the day really is the fresh catch of the day! And if you spent the day deep sea fishing, most of the marina restaurants will prepare your own catch for you however you want it! 

Maybe next time, we’ll stay in one of the new hotels on Medano Beach—the only truly swimmable beach in Cabo. It’s close to all the fun and funky bars and walkable to town. 

There is so much to do and see in Cabo San Lucas—not just in the fall, but at any time of the year. We’re already planning next year’s trip!
